Nikki Alcala, MSN, RN, NPD-BC, PHN, is a nurse passionate about advancing health equity and justice through education. They are currently working as an Educator at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU), where she partners with colleagues to identify educational needs and develop appropriate methodologies to ensure employee knowledge and competency, especially in the areas of diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging, and justice (DEIBJ) and health literacy. Currently she is part of the team training all employees and leaders at OHSU on Leading DEIB and Inclusion & Respect. Nikki is also a diversity champion at OHSU, working alongside leaders to ensure a DEI lens is used as clinical programs are expanded and physical spaces are built. She highlights the needs and rights of underrepresented and disenfranchised population groups, such as people of color, LGBTQ people, people with disabilities, and people with different body sizes. As a steering committee member of the OHSU DEIB nursing work stream, Nikki can help bring attention to underestimated staff and patient populations. She also serves as the inaugural Wellness Officier for the OHSU Jewish ERG. Nikki holds a master's degree in nursing administration and leadership from SUNY Empire State College, where she was a cultural diversity fellow. They are currently pursuing a doctorate in nursing practice from Capella University. She is a former chair of the ANA's Innovation Advisory Committee on Policy and Determinants of Health and serves on the National Association of Hispanic Nurses (NAHN) DEI Committee. Nikki's mission is to educate healthcare professionals to provide judgment-free and culturally responsive care, advocate for all patients, and ensure patients know their rights in our complicated healthcare system.
